Share Your Project

The concept of ‘Sharing’

Final Cut Pro X (FCPX) calls exporting ‘Sharing’. If you want to export your finished timeline you will need to use the ‘Share’ options. There are two ways to get there. The first way is File > Share:

The second way is by clicking the ‘Share‘ icon on your timeline:

In general, for class projects, you will want to select MASTER FILE.

Once there, you will see this window (below). The INFO tab is where you can customize your information.

In the SETTINGS tab, you can change things including  your Format, Codec and Chapter Markers settings. For most class projects, you will select APPLE PRO RES 422 as your video codec. This will be a large file. (If you need a smaller file that still has high quality, you can choose H.264.)

One thing to be careful of here is that you don’t have a range selected in your Event window (where you have all your clips).

If you do, you will only export that portion of that clip.

Double check your time indicted on the bottom of the Master File window. It should show the full length of your project (see below).

Hit the NEXT button and give your exported file a name and save it in whatever location you wish (stay organized).

Once you click the SAVE button the program will start to do the work. You can monitor your progress by watching the PROGRESS indicator in the middle of the program.

Once completed, you can then move your new file into the CLASS DROP folder, copy to an external hard drive, import that file back into FCPX for further editing, or even use that file to upload to youtube (you should use H.264 for that). In other words, you’re done. 💥
